General information

Pre-requisites

Practice Management version 11.2 including APS Cloud Services is a pre-requisite for this release in order to utilise TDS services and Web Return Lodgement features. Practice Management and cloud service information can be found here:  PM Product Page . A setup guide for TDS is also available from the NZ Tax Product Page

B2B Windows Service

From April 2020, IRD moved the last legacy system transactions over to the TDS service. IRD have subsequently terminated delivery of any transactions via the Tax Agent Web Service (TAWS).  There is therefore no need to install or retain this service. If it is still present on your system, you may remove it as it is now obsolete.

Microsoft Access Runtime

This release now supports Microsoft Access Runtime versions 2013 and 2016, in addition to existing support for 2010.  Access Runtime 2003 and 2007 versions are no longer supported. Access Runtime is required only if you do not already have Office Professional package which includes the retail version of Access.

Knowledge Base

Any known issues found in this release can be reviewed in the Tax NZ 2020 Known Issues article # KA-03774 under the 2020 Q3 header.

Enhancements for this release

This release has primarily been focused on the development of web returns lodgement functionality via IRD Gateway services, as a replacement for E-file. E-file lodgement is still currently available via our software and via IRD’s E-file facility, this will be ceased before the end of the current Tax Year ending 31 March 2021.

Our intention is to ensure that all clients are ready to lodge all return types via Gateway Services prior to 31 March 2021.

Filing of INC Returns via Gateway services (Coming Soon)

We are in the process of implementing new functionality for filing INC return types to IRD via Gateway services. This will initially be a limited beta release and is detailed in a separate User Guide document made available to those clients participating in the beta. It is designed to replace E-file functionality due to be phased out by IRD by the end of the current tax year. All clients will have the ability to file INC returns via Gateway services in due course, but for now E-file is still available and its use should be continued. This  August release contains many updates which are not visible until enabled as they are required only to facilitate the filing of INC returns via Gateway Services. Therefore you will not see these changes immediately, but we do recommend that you install the Quarter 3 August release software so that these features are ready once the migration to Gateways services commences.

Ability to move IRD transactions to another tax year ledger

IRD transactions that are sent through via TDS are sometimes assigned to the incorrect tax year, meaning it is impossible to match to the correct transaction. This seems to be an intermittent issue with IRD data, in the meantime we have implemented functionality to allow this to be corrected easily by moving a transaction or batch of transactions to the correct year header.

Learn more about how to utilise this feature in our How to move IRD Transactions to another tax year article.

Tax Manager history selection toggle

Following client requests, we have enhanced the recently introduced history selection toggle feature in Tax Manager.

The History Selection toggle was previously set to On by default:

It can now be set to on or off by default per user, depending on preference.

By default, the option is now deselected, which means the client selection field is searching the entire database. The button can still be enabled on an ‘ad-hoc’ basis to search recent history selections only, or it can be set to be the default by opening the filter button the right

and checking the ‘Set History list as default’ option, then Apply button to save changes.

If this is checked then each time the user opens Tax Manager, the history toggle will be already enabled.

IRD Activity Log Notifications

Any notifications received from IRD are also synchronised to the IRD Activity Log ribbon on the Compliance Admin page in PM. This page replaces the previous notifications for TAWS transactions which are now obsolete. More information on these notifications in the What is the IRD Activity Log page in Compliance Admin? article.

The following types of notifications may be visible, depending on the information sent by IRD. This information can be filtered by date and/or by Notification type:

Enhanced Encryption for TMNZ and MyIRD logins

An enhancement has been made to boost security around stored logins held within Tax. The data encryption has been improved so that user details can no longer be potentially accessed incorrectly.  To ensure the new encryption is correctly applied to all users, all user passwords will be reset by the version control. This affects users who make tax credit purchases via TMNZ Tax pooling services, or who use the myIRD login in the IRD Website page of the Tax Returns console.

We therefore advise that clients using these features be aware that they will be prompted to reset these passwords the next time the feature is accessed. Note that this does not affect the user logins and passwords used to gain access to PM or Tax software, these are already correctly encrypted.

GST Standard Matter default setting

To allow GST Web Return information to be updated correctly back to the desktop software from the Web Returns a new System and user settings (SUPS) setting to define the GST Standard Matter ID has been added.

You will find that this value is already populated which what APS have defined as your GST Standard Matter, please check this setting and the standard matter ID to ensure it is correct.
This can be confirmed by opening the Standard Matter console to locate the ID per below screenshot:

TDS Transaction matching improvements

We have made some further changes to the matching logic for TDS transactions. System discards have been updated to result in fewer incorrect discards taking place. For example, assessed refunds and their associated transfers are now included instead of being discarded automatically.

We have also updated the Insert Ledger Payment Transactions to use the SUPS setting TDS Match: Payments up to Days Diff to determine the days range for matching. This was previously was hard-wired to use 14 days. You may wish to review this setting to check it meets your requirements. Providing a relatively high ‘Days diff’ value (eg. 21) will ensure very early or very late payments are still picked up by the auto-match process, if enabled.
